Traffic Analysis
In order to really be successful in online marketing, you have to be creative and analytic. Traffic Analysis focuses on the behavior of people when they come to your website. Where did they come from, how did they find you and what did they do when they got there. Answers to those questions are simply statistics. Gaining value from those statistics lies in answering, “Why?”. Why did they stop on this page in the website? Why do you have better results from Yahoo than Google?
Many people can look at statistics, but what we can learn from these statistics is where true analysis lies. Some times, the analysis is simple and based on other knowledge. For instance, if you are selling to women you should attract more quality visitors from MSN (about 58% woman) than Google (About 55% men). If this is not the case, we should be looking at positioning in MSN (now powered by Bing). We can also decipher other information from traffic analysis, like when your visitors are spending the most time on your site. If we find that people visit during work hours we could then start implementing strategies that help get those people back at other times, or we may reinforce our brand by advertising on radio stations that often play in offices during the day.
These are just two, simple examples of how we find value from analyzing our site traffic. And with just a little more understanding we can quickly start to see the benefits. Once I know where and who my customers are, I can better talk to them and reduce my expenses. We will speak their language with focused marketing. While expenses go down, our results improve. Anytime you can be more focused, you are more likely to succeed.
